Syria has experienced a bloody 14-year civil war. Hundreds of thousands killed, hundreds of thousands imprisoned, millions displaced… The country and people of Syria were devastated!
On December 8, 2024, the unexpected happened!.. After a few days of attacks, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) reached Damascus. Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad fled!..
The Syrian people described this day as a dream. The oppression was over, the oppression was over – the door of hope was opened before them!.. Bright days were ahead of them, a safe and peaceful future was coming!..
These were the hopes, but the reality was something else!.. The tragedy of Syria is not over – it has taken on another format, another face!..
The messages of the early days of HTS and its leader Ahmed al-Sharq were very positive! Social peace was being achieved, Communities were gaining their rights, Democracy was becoming a system!..
Sharq even changed his clothes!. A hat, a shirt, a tie!.. He stepped forward like a young man who would fulfill the hopes of the Syrian people!
Messages of peace abroad, as well as messages of internal peace!..
But, in practice, this did not happen! The words of peace/gentleness were implemented externally as they were!.. But, the messages of peace: internal peace, social peace, peace of all components/peoples of Syria – did not happen! On the contrary – attacks against the demands of the people and unity of Syria!..
They set up a government, they set up a commission, they set up a temporary constitution, they set up military officials! All of them, from their surroundings, from within HTS…
They never held a dialogue with the peoples/elements of Syria – Alevis, Druze, Kurds!..
They never had a dialogue with the religions of Syria – Christians, Yazidis…!.. They never had a dialogue with women or young people! However, civil-democratic institutions, Despite the intellectual world, the elders, the opposition… they didn’t give up!..
Now, all these parties are suspicious of Sharq’s actions and his authority!..
On the ground, in order to enforce their authority, the East and the HTS regime carried out very violent and widespread attacks on the Alawite community on the coast of Syria. Basic human rights were violated!.. Families were massacred, including women and children!..
Tens of thousands of Alevis fled, fearing for their lives!… Alevis are afraid of their existence, they are afraid of their future!.. With this government, they do not believe in a hopeful, peaceful, safe and democratic life!
One of the largest churches in Syria/Damascus, Mar Elias, was the victim of a violent terrorist attack.
A huge explosion occurred! Dozens of people from the Christian religious community lost their lives! No real investigation was conducted into the incident!..
Christians are afraid of their existence, they are afraid of their future!..
With this government, they do not believe in a hopeful, peaceful, safe and democratic life! The Druze community, especially in the Sweida region, has been subjected to many inhumane attacks under the guise of ensuring security. They have been killed, tortured, their values and rights have been violated!..
The Druze have openly stated: they are afraid for their existence, they are afraid for their future!
With this government, they do not believe in a hopeful, peaceful, safe and democratic life!
Kurds, as the second largest ethnic group in Syria, are watching the actions and actions of the authorities with great suspicion!

If this happens, Syria will face its biggest challenge! Everything will end before it even begins!.. Today’s Syria, under the rule of HTS, has itself surrendered to foreign agendas! Syrian people/groups say: During Assad’s time, the parties with a say in Syria were: Russia and Iran. The Syrian regime acted within the framework of Russia’s and especially Iran’s agendas.
Now, HTS is also operating within the framework of the agendas of Turkey, Arab countries (especially Qatar and Saudi Arabia), and America!..
This also complicates the internal situation in Syria!…
In the war between the Damascus government and the Druze, it was very clear!.. Israel does not accept attacks on the Druze on the ground and is ready to invade Syria, especially Damascus, to protect them/as well as its own agendas!..
Turkey is trying by all means to prevent the Kurds from having a status in Syria! This also creates problems for coordination with the Kurds and Damascus. The East and its authorities cannot act independently in internal peace.
At the same time, when the interests of the United States, Israel, Turkey, Qatar, and some other Arab countries on Syrian territory come into conflict, this directly affects the internal situation in Syria!
Can Syria become a sovereign country?
Can it have its own will and act within its own interests?
Yes, it can!..
Still, there is a chance for this! A National Dialogue and the resulting participation of national parties, the main components in Syria, the writing of a New Constitution based on the reality of Syria and the recognition of human, social, and structural rights, a social consensus on a foundation of security and peace, are the cure for the disease of Syria!
